BACK PAIN CENTER

(Pain of the rachis, backache, lombosciatalgia)

The Back Pain Center is an interdisciplinary center for the diagnosis and therapy of backache. This definition includes many clinical situations in which the pain in the lumbar region is always present, with or without irradiations to the lower limbs. There can be multiple causes but the most frequent are, definitely, of muscle-skeletal origin (discopathy, rupture of the disc, arthrosis, ecc.).
In industrialized countries, the back pain represents the pathology with the highest incidence, causing high social costs.
The diagnosis begins with the clinical evaluation (anamnesis, objective examination), the most important element to evaluate a patient with rachialgia; but it is also useful in order to create a relationship between physician and patient.
The clinical examination must be completed with all the instrumental analyses necessary for a better diagnostic definition (RX, TAC, RMN, EMG).
The therapeutic approach is necessarily multidisciplinary, and involves many specialists (orthopaedist, algologist, neurologist, physiotherapist, psycologist). Each of them contributes to reach a possible success not always easy to obtain for such a pathology.
The BACK PAIN treatment foresees numerous options: intensive physiokinesiotherapy, analgesic infiltrations on the involved nervous structures, surgical intervention in particular conditions..
